Johannes Weisser

Norwegian baritone Johannes Weisser studied at the Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and at the Royal Danish Academy of Opera in Copenhagen with Susanna Eken.

In the spring of 2004, at the age of 23, he made his debut at the Norwegian National Opera as well as at the Komische Oper Berlin, in both houses as Masetto in Don Giovanni. Since then he has established himself as one of the most exciting Scandinavian singers of his generation.

Engagements have brought him to Salzburg Festival, Staatsoper Berlin, Teatro Real Madrid, Theater an der Wien, Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Opéra national du Rhin Strasbourg, Opéra Royal de Versailles, Opéra de Dijon, Opéra de Lausanne, Canadian Opera Company, Opera Bilbao, Megaron Athens, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Komische Oper Berlin, Norwegian National Opera, Royal Danish Opera, Edinburgh International Festival, Innsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik and Flanders Festival Bruges.

His roles include the title role in EUGENE ONEGIN, the title role and Leporello in DON GIOVANNI, Guglielmo in COSÌ FAN TUTTE, Papageno in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Don Pizarro in FIDELIO, Schaunard in LA BOHÈME, Malatesta in DON PASQUALE, Mr. Flint in BILLY BUDD, Agamemnon in Gluck’s IPHIGÉNIE EN AULIDE, Ramiro in Ravel’s L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE, King Theseus in Britten’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, the title role in Grieg’s PEER GYNT, Plutone and Pastore 4 in Monteverdi’s L’ORFEO, Achilla in GIULIO CESARE, Valens in THEODORA, Melisso in ALCINA, Licomede in DEIDEMIA, Minos in ARIANNA IN CRETA, Villotto in Haydn’s LA VERA COSTANZA, Giove in Cavalli’s LA CALISTO and Corpo in Cavalieri’s LA RAPPRESENTAZIONE DI ANIMA.

Johannes Weisser is a much sought-after concert, oratorio and singer and he regularly appears in concert venues and festivals throughout Europe. He has a considerable repertoire that spans music from the early 17th Century works of Monteverdi up to 20th Century works of Weill, Britten and contemporary composers. He is an exceptionally communicative “Lied”-singer. His concerts have attracted much attention and have been highly praised.

Engagements in 2017 included Bass 1 in Purcell’s KING ARTHUR at the Staatsoper Berlin, Don Pizarro in Beethoven’s LEONORE in Vienna, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne and Baden-Baden with Freiburger Barockorchester, the title role in DON GIOVANNI with Opera East, Mahler’s DES KNABEN WUNDERHORN with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION in Paris, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Budapest and Krakow with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Telemann’s BROCKES PASSION in Wroclaw and Legnica with Il Giardino Armonico, Gade’s ELVERSKUD in Copenhagen with Concerto Copenhagen, Bach’s MAGNIFICAT with Malmö Symphony Orchestra, an Opera Gala at the Kirsten Flagstad Festival and arias and duets by Mozart in Antwerp, Bruges, Würzburg, Bergen, Beaune with B’Rock.

2018 has so far included the title role in DON GIOVANNI at the Norwegian National Opera, Germont in LA TRAVIATA with Opera Trondheim, Bach’s ST JOHN PASSION in Bamberg with Bamberg Symphoniker, Telemann’s BROCKES PASSION in Budapest with Orfeo Orchestra, Verdi’s REQUIEM in Oslo with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Mahler’s KINDERTOTENLIEDER in Oslo as well as in Hasvik and Alta, arias by Mozart in Finnmark, Schumann’s DICHTERLIEBE and Grieg’s VINJE-SONGS in Oslo and a highly acclaimed Lied-recital at the Eppaner Lied Festival (directed by the legendary Brigitte Fassbaender).

Johannes has recorded the title role in DON GIOVANNI, Don Pizarro in LEONORE, Telemann’s BROCKES PASSION, Haydn’s DIE SCHÖPFUNG, Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION as well as ST JOHN PASSION – all with René Jacobs, Haydn’s APPLAUSUS with Andreas Spering, Achilla in GIULIO CESARE and Licaone in Handel’s GIOVE IN ARGO with Alan Curtis, David in Staale Kleiberg’s DAVID AND BATHSHEBA, Ståle Kleiberg’s MASS FOR A MODERN MAN with Trondheim Sinfonietta and a highly acclaimed CD with songs by Grieg.
